History

Fernlea Nurseries was established in october 1994, where we set ourselves up as a trade nursery based in Crawley, nr Winchester. We moved to Embly Park in Romsey 3 years later, and then acquired our own land just outside Kings Somborne, Winchester, in 2001.

The Long and Winding Road. Starting with just open grassland, our first task was to create 200 metres of roadway. The footings were dug out to 30cms, and this was filled with over 160 tons of hardcore courtesy of our friends at BKP Environmental Services Ltd, Romsey.

This was then capped with hogging supplied by WH Berry & Son, Sherfield English.

The first four polytunnels were erected 6 months later.

Calling on the skills obtained from Christmas 1974 and the mechano set kindly supplied to Ben by Mr S Claus, we proceeded to piece together the first of 4 of the 18m x 12 m polytunnels.

We now have 10 tunnels including one of which is heated, into which we will shortly be resiting our propogation unit from Whitchurch.

Contract growing has increased and demanded that we store more compost, fertilisers, and pots so the next project was a a yard.

Contrary to popular speculation, the 13 ton machine that was used to prepare the foundations and utimately construct our yard, was not made from Ben's mechano set. It was in fact hired in from our friends at Rentool, in Chandlers Ford.

Our latest expansion consists of a 3200 sq m standing out area where we have taken on additional contract growing for one of the South's largest and most established nurseries.

This is just one example of the commitment to our quality of stock, which we sell direct to the public through Hampshire Farmers Markets.
